July 19, 2013
While many people across the Chicago area were celebrating a long July 4th weekend, violence continued to reign the streets of our city. Between Wednesday and Sunday of that weekend, 12 people were killed and over 62 injured- pushing the number of homicides in 2013 past 200. As Jews in Chicago, we cannot stand idly by as the blood of our neighbors is shed. Our tradition teaches: Whoever destroys a life, it is as if s/he has destroyed a whole world (Mishnah Sanhedrin 4:5). Worlds are being destroyed on a daily basis in Chicago- a profound affront to our values.
In response, JCUA will participate in a press conference and action on Sunday, July 28th with FIERCE Women of Faith. This is a coalition of people of faith from across the city and suburbs who are coming together to stop the violence. The details of the event can be found below. Please let us know if you plan on attending by clicking here. If you have any questions, please contact Rabbi Ali Abrams, Director of Organizing at firstname.lastname@example.org.
