For the second time in July, Or Tzedek and Jewish Student Connection joined ONE Northside’s Voter Registration campaign to register 5,000 people in Lakeview, Edgewater, Uptown and Rogers Park. Six Or Tzedek participants interned with ONE Northside during Advanced Activism and Or Tzedek youth have continued to work on the campaign throughout the summer. So far, Or Tzedek has registered almost 200 voters with ONE Northside!
After registering voters on July 23, Sarina Elenbogen commented, “as people filled out the registration forms I realized that they were doing this for themselves. Informing people about our cause and giving them the chance to vote made me realize how much each vote counts.”
Sarina, as well as Gracee Wallach, were both a part of Or Tzedek and Beth Emet’s year long Jewish organizing program.
Reflecting on her voter registration experience, Gracee said, “working with ONE Northside was so rewarding because not only were we helping our community register to vote, we were helping them to have a say in what they believe in. Seeing people get excited about voting AND excited about raising the minimum wage definitely gave me faith in our community being able to create real change.”
The teens also learned about the relationships between voting and electoral power.
Brian Crotty, who participated in Advanced Activism this past June, explained that voter registration is “an experience as informative as it is fun. Being out in these communities and building electoral power builds belief in not only these communities, but also belief in ourselves. I’ve seen some of the shyest people speak with so much confidence in their encounters it’s like they’re a different person. It’s incredible.”
